Johnson's book was the first time I have seen a good explanation of why. My husband owned a copy of this book a long time ago and would take it with him whenever he travelled on business. For rail enthusiasts, social historians, or for those who like myself are researching ancestors who were railwaymen, it's a uniquely valuable account. This book is a wonderful take on a hobby presented by a professional model maker rather than a hobbyist.
Whilst in itself it may not teach you about specific modelling techniques, there are many specialist topic related books and magazines that are better, it does show a different approach on how to build a plausible and functioning model railway.
