Perhaps that is the book's only stumbling point: that it sticks too rigidly to historical fact, without unleashing Robertson's creative imagination and letting it run riot. If I could, I give it five stars for the first two thirds, and zero stars for the finish.
Spoiler Alert: The hero, Jack Dulaney, escapes from a chain gang in California to go off to the Jersey shore to rescue the love of his life, Holly, from a mysterious and ruthless gang of murderers who killed her father. You will be far from "finished" with the Middle East - you have entered a holy, broken, mystical, and humbling land. But other than that, don't expect to see much from the characters in the first book. Desert Shamanism was not written orignally to share with the world. Hence, even though its name is likely based ona long-forgotten pagan goddess, this oldest Christian holiday is also probably the purest and most spiritual. I bought this book with the intention of reading it for a 2 week vacation period
